How Exercise Can Help You Beat The January Blues

January is supposed to be a time for new resolutions and positive change, but for many people it’s the most miserable month of the year.

Let’s face it, there’s very little to be happy about. The holidays are over, the weather is bleak, and it’s back to work as usual. To top it off, you look like you’ve swallowed a baby beluga whale, after overindulging on one too many mince pies and glasses of prosecco.

But don’t worry, because exercise is here to help.

Sure, it might be the last thing you want to do when you’re feeling low, but it’s a great way to increase your energy levels, lose weight and fill you with fresh optimism for the future.

Get Outdoors

If you’re suffering from a case of the January Blues, it could be down to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

SAD is a seasonal condition that is particularly common during the autumn and winter months, when the days are shorter and there’s less sunlight. This can sap your energy and really bring you down.

By exercising outdoors and exposing yourself to natural sunlight, you can enhance your Vitamin D production, boost your serotonin levels and reduce the symptoms of SAD.

Don’t worry if you don’t have any running or cycling gear. Even a brisk walk is a great way to get your blood pumping and give yourself a cardio workout.

Release Endorphins

If it’s raining outside, why not stay indoors and do a home workout?

When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins which trigger the opioid receptors in your brain. These receptors help to reduce pain and increase pleasure, giving you a greater sense of happiness and wellbeing.

So, whether indoors or out, exercise is a great way to beat the winter blues.

Decrease Your Stress

Practising yoga helps you to focus on the moment, rather than concentrating on negative thoughts that are clogging up your mind.

The ancient mind-body exercise combines breathing and meditation techniques with various movements, called asanas. Focusing on your breathing helps to clear your mind, relax your body and lower your heart rate which helps you to seamlessly flow from one pose to the next.

Treat Yourself

Exercise isn’t the only way to lift your spirits.

Whether it’s a bar of your favourite chocolate or a long, relaxing bath, it’s also important that you take time out to treat yourself and do the things you love.

Why not?

We’re all human at the end of the day, and we all need a treat from time to time. It can be just thing you need to get you through January.

Get The Right Equipment

There’s no need to spend a fortune on a gym ball, dumbbells and every other bit of equipment you can get your hands on. After all, it’s January and money’s tight. All you really need to get your started is a fitness mat, and our premium mat ticks all the boxes.

Not only is it great for regular exercises, but it’s a top choice for yoga too.

That’s because it combines the comfort and cushioning you need for physical exercise with the grip and stability you need to practise all those complex yoga movements.
